Gian Carlo Varela Castillo (Born September 29, 1993, professionally known as Gian Varela, is a Panamanian DJ, Producer and Composer. His Works are known for fusing Dance with Latin Music.

First years:

Born in Panama City, Panama to a father who produced events and a mother as a radio Host: he was introduced to the World of Music and Entertainment at an early age. He began Djing at the age of 11 performing in private events like friend’s parties, school events, and such.


He started getting his first bookings as a mobile Dj at the age of 15. He gained national recognition when he performed for the first time in his Nation’s carnivals in the town of Penonome to more than 8,000 people live. This gained him the attention of latin booking agency: Feel the Club International, where they would hire Gian to open to, at that time’s #1 Worldwide DJ: Tiesto.

Once he completed his presentation, he is signed by the same booking agency.

2009 – 2011:

At the age of 16, he moves to United States: Connecticut to complete his high school years. Being 2 hours away to New York, he begins his training as a musical producer. At this time, he also began touring the American continent as the support Dj for many of the bigger EDM acts. At the same time, balancing his studies with his musical training and touring.

In the summer of 2011, he creates his first Dance Music Festival: Paradise 507 which in the future would become one of Panama’s more emblematic festivals. This would impulse him as a Pioneer in his country’s dance music scene and introduce him not just as a DJ/Producer, but as an entertainment entrepreneur and visionary in the Panamanian market.

2011- 2016:

Once he graduates high school, he moves to Washington DC, where he would assist American University and work a side Job in the DC Dance Scene. In his first year he began working with Panorama Productions: the leading Dance company in DC owners of various clubs and Echostage. This impulse him to showcase himself across various of Panorama’s clubs and bars. He was also a promoter of the concerts and nocturnal events of the company.

In his second year he certifices himself as a musical producer through Dubspot Academy and as a dance music composer through Point Blank Academy. Meanwhile, he still toured the American continent with Feel The Club International. In his third year in college he had already toured the entire American continent with the biggest acts of dacne music such as David Guetta, Steve Aoki, Avicii, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Axwell Ingrosso, Chuckie, Paul Oakenfold and many more.

To add to that, his national business ventures with his festivals had grown in the span of the years and what began as the creation of one festival, continued to the creation of a company with his older cousin and two close friends. This company began managing the same carnival he performed in 2011, various festivals and micro events. It also helped bigger concerts and festivals from other companies in the region such as The Day After.

In His last years of college he had created a very strong college following in DC as a DJ, mainly being the latin community. This impulsed him to mix latin music with dance music in his presentacions which would also push him to combine the sounds in his musical productions.

He graduated American University in 2016 and he returned to his country with a bachelor degree in the business of entertainment plus 6 years of musical training.


When he returns, he meets: Rodney Clark: better known as El Chombo. EL Chombo is recognized as one of the founding fathers of “PLENA” and “DEMBOW”: the origins of the reggaeton gender. Who produced the now a days: Tu Cosita Challenge. Clark took Gian as his pupil and guided him through the sound and creation of latin music and its elements. In January 2017, Gian releases his first single featuring El Chombo and one of Panama’s top urban vocalists: Mr. Fox. In less than two weeks his song goes viral in panama. This, with his strong network in the Panamanian entertainment market: catapult him to tour across his country and through creatively mixing latin with dance music: gets to open for leading latin artists such as: Ozuna, bad Bunny, Arcangel, Chino & Nacho. He is also invited to be the opener for Justin Bieber in his Purpose World Tour: Panama.

In a tour with Chino & Nacho in Panama, he meets the duo: San Luis, which offer him a remix of their latin hit: Se Acabo. This release is signed with Sony Music and it hits Gian’s first million plays in the Spotify platform.

After the rupture of Chino & Nacho, he releases his second single: Los Dueños De La Calle with Chyno Miranda. In the second month of the song’s promotion, the song charted the top 5 in radio with Panama, competing with Fonsi’s Despacito, Maluma’s Chantaje, and Nacho’s Bailame. Universal offers to sign the song for a relaunch.


In February of 2018, he releases his collaboration with his mentor in the latin urban world: El Chombo: Creating a Re Work of “El Gato Volador” song which hit worldwide in the 90s. In it’s first months, the song has hit half a million streams in Spotify and enters the Spotify Viral Charts of: Mexico, Australia, Spain, and Panama.

In the present, Gian continues to tour producing new music and getting ready to release all his repertoire.
